Is God’s timing truly perfect? Here is a wonderful example of how God is working in and blessing our lives. Over a year ago we decided to increase our business presence in the SC upstate. We tried to hire Mike Thompson, whom I had worked with at Electrical South, but were unsuccessful. We attempted to hire Doc Phipps, another strong candidate for that area, but failed. Shortly thereafter we looked into purchasing a motor service company in the Greenville area, but we ran into obstacles. We were discouraged. Then, in early January, without any pre-planning it became apparent that Mike Thompson should join our company. He did and began work in mid-January. In early February Mike hired Doc Phipps to join TEAMSESCO to help him in account sales management in SC and GA. At almost the same time we came to an agreement with Howard Demore of Greenville Electric Motor Repair and purchased his company in mid-February. Now we are positioned to do great things in this new territory. God had given us all that we had wanted; only He did it at the best time – His perfect time.

Our 90th Anniversary - The Early Years

by Trey Smith, President

In 1911 W. A. Lawrence founded Lawrence Armature Winding and Ferro Fix Brazing Co. in Charlotte, NC. To pay for COD shipments Lawrence often borrowed money from Charles Barker, a tenant renting an apartment above the company. As Lawrence was unable to repay those loans, Barker agreed to take some ownership in the company. On March 7, 1913, the two men met at 3:00 PM in the Trust Building and incorporated as Charlotte Electric Repair Co., thus the humble beginning of TEAMSESCO. The first stockholders’ meeting was held on September 12, 1913, at the company’s 2003 office located at 508 West Fourth Street in Charlotte. In 1918 W. W. Hanks, an engineer with Catawba Power Co., now Duke Power, and 24 year old W. Hill Smith, Greg’s and my grandfather, joined the company. Smith, a native of Norwood, NC, was working for Barker at Marshall Field & Co. as a burlap salesman. Smith declined an offered transfer to Marshall Field’s Chicago office deciding that a career in Charlotte better suited him and his new wife, Esther DeArmond. Hanks served as company engineer and Smith as financial officer. In the early 1920’s Paul Rhyne, Smith’s college roommate, joined the company as a sales

Hill Smith and Louis Bryson
by Trey Smith, President

Hill Smith joined TEAMSESCO 20 years ago in Charlotte at age 13. Before he was legally able to work in the process areas, he was the company’s handy man, doing everything from installing fencing to painting the building. He has done machine work, repaired motors, gearboxes, and hoists, as well as wired custom control systems. In 1996 he joined our Burlington team soon becoming Branch Manager. He is now one of our top Account Managers, handling the Triad of NC. Hill, my oldest son, has really grown up in the business.

While earning his BA in Business at Lees-McRae College, Hill managed several of the shops in Ski-Beech Village. He lives in Greensboro with his wife and three sons. Hill and Phyllis are active in their church and enjoy a variety of family outdoor activities such as water and snow skiing, hunting, and camping.

Louis Bryson After three years of electrical repair training in the Navy, Louis began his career at G.E. Apparatus Service in Charlotte. He has a wealth of experience that includes managing large motor repair operations, serving as Quality Assurance Manager for nuclear motor repair, and selling drives and motors to all major industries.

Louis has stayed up to date with technology through continuing education at technical schools and manufacturer’s seminars. He and his wife, Donna, have four children and eight grandchildren. Their spare time is spent “grand-parenting” and working with the youth group at their church in Gastonia. In January he took forty young people to the “Big God conference” in Myrtle Beach.

Louis’ personal motto is “to provide the best service I can to my customers.” We are proud to have Louis as one of the “pros” on our team as an Account Manager based in Charlotte.
