In 1998 TEAMSESCO contracted with an independent, not-for-profit testing laboratory, located on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, for the purpose of testing the before and after energy efficiency of electric motors that were remanufactured in TEAMSESCO’s service center. The laboratory was formed in 1980 by the State Utilities Commission and financially supported by five public utilities in the southeast. TEAMSESCO’s goal was to ensure that their motor remanufacturing (including rewinding) process did not degrade the efficiency of a new motor by more than one half of one percent (0.5%). TEAMSESCO’s procedures already included core-loss testing of motors prior to and after processing in a controlled temperature oven. Inverter-duty wire and Class “H” insulation was also a standard for all repaired motors. The test went as follows: The laboratory selected two new motors still in the manufacturer’s box. TEAMSESCO shipped the motors to the lab, where they were run under load and tested for efficiency. Next the windings were cut off on one end, and the motors were returned to TEAMSESCO. Both motors were processed using TEAMSESCO’s standard practices and then completely remanufactured including insulating, rewinding, ensuring all mechanical fits, and installation of new bearings. Following complete testing including core loss, surge comparison, high potential, balancing, and vibration, the motors were returned to the laboratory in Raleigh. They were checked for efficiency including evaluation of the new windings and friction and windage losses. Both motors achieved efficiency ratings within 4/10 of one percent (0.4%) of the original new motors. For several years following, TEAMSESCO paid the laboratory a fee to randomly select motors for efficiency testing on an annual basis. All motors tested were within the same 0.4% range of new. TEAMSESCO has continued the same processes and procedures since then. This commitment assures our customers that when we make the decision to remanufacturer a motor, it will be returned in like-new condition, retaining the efficiency as designed by the manufacturer and maximizing the return of our customer’s energy cost.
